About the Artist

Janis Hall is a Kalamazoo‑born artist whose work blends emotional honesty with a lifelong fascination for color, movement, and form. After decades spent building a successful career in technology — a world of systems, logic, and precision — she returned to the creative pull that has been with her since childhood. Her art practice now serves as both expression and refuge, a place where intuition leads and structure loosens.

Janis Hall’s work blends abstraction with natural forms, using animals and botanicals as emotional anchors within layered, intuitive compositions. Her pieces explore the tension between internal noise and external clarity, often letting a single fox, fern, or crow emerge from a field of color and rhythm. She works across a wide range of materials and techniques, where she can translate internal noise into shape, rhythm, and color. Her process is rooted in exploration: layering, erasing, reworking, and letting the unexpected emerge. Each piece carries the imprint of her lived experience — the places she’s called home, the cultures she’s moved through, and the emotional landscapes she navigates with curiosity and courage.

Originally from Portage, Michigan, Janis’s professional life took her to South Carolina, Washington D.C., Chicago, and several years in Europe with her Flemish husband before returning to the Kalamazoo area. Travel remains a source of inspiration, especially their time spent wandering through Belgium and the rest of Europe.

Her work reflects a life shaped by movement, reinvention, and the freedom of coloring outside the lines — both on the canvas and beyond it.
